ABOUT US

The Loveland Foundation was established in 2018 by Rachel Cargle in response to her widely successful birthday wish fundraiser, Therapy for Black Women and Girls. Her enthusiastic social media community raised over $250,000, which made it possible for Black women and girls nationally to receive therapy support. Black women and girls deserve access to healing, and that healing will impact generations.

The Loveland Foundation is the official continuation of this effort to bring opportunity and healing to communities of color, and especially to Black women and girls. Through fellowships, residency programs, listening tours, and more, ultimately we hope to contribute to both the empowerment and the liberation of the communities we serve.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Rachel Cargle (Founder and President)

Rachel Cargle is an Akron, Ohio born writer, entrepreneur and philanthropic innovation. Her work and upcoming book with Penguin Random House, centers the reimagining of womanhood, solidarity and self and how we are in relationship with ourselves and one another. In 2018 she founded The Loveland Foundation, Inc., a non-profit offering free therapy to Black women and girls.  

Her umbrella company, The Loveland Group houses a collection of Rachel’s social ventures including The Great Unlearn, a self-paced, donation-based learning community, The Great Unlearn for Young Learners – an online learning space for young folks launching in 2022, and Elizabeth’s Bookshop & Writing Centre – an innovative literacy space designed to amplify, celebrate and honor the work of writers who are often excluded from traditional cultural, social and academic canons.

Rachel is a regular contributor to Cultured magazine, Atmos magazine and The Cut, and has been featured in The Washington Post, The New York Times, Forbes, Harper’s Bazaar and The New Yorker. Rachel lives & loves in Brooklyn, New York.


 

Joe Davis IV (Treasurer)

Born in Ohio, Joe decided to leave his hometown of Columbus,Ohio in 2006 to attend the illustrious Howard University. Passionate to help people in his community lead Joe to purse a pre med curriculum. Often spending his time volunteering eventually lead him to starting his own nonprofit while attending Howard. After graduating with a B.S from Howard; he knew there was more he wanted to achieve in business. He then pursued a career in sales and business development while pursuing several entrepreneurial goals. Joe spends the majority of his time working with private clients to grow their businesses. Aside from working Joe enjoys spending time with his family, working out, cooking/eating and traveling.


 

Donita Volkwijn (Secretary)

Donita joined Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors in May 2012, and serves as Manager of Knowledge Management. Through her previous roles at Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors, Donita has engaged with a range of individual donors and family foundations, and is now working with her team to catalog and disseminate organizational knowledge with the goal of enhancing Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors’ profile as a thought leader. Based in New York, she helps internal and external clients develop and implement effective strategies to achieve their philanthropic goals. She is deeply interested in creating and implementing a theory of change, not only as a means of harnessing knowledge, but also as a means of effecting cultural change that serves to inform the sector.

Donita holds extensive experience in the performing arts, having sung in such varied places as London, Paris, Harare, San Francisco, and Tulsa. She attended Oberlin College for her undergraduate studies and The Cleveland Institute of Music for her graduate work, studied German literature and holds a B.M. and M.M in vocal performance. She was born in South Africa and has lived there as well as in Germany, Belgium, and the United States.
